iodine absorption through skin
What you should know about iodine deficiency What is iodine deficiency? You need a certain amount of iodine in your body to make a chemical known as thyroid hormone. Thyroid hormone controls your metabolism and other important functions of the body. Low iodine levels are not the only cause of low thyroid function. But lack of iodine can cause abnormal enlargement of the thyroid gland, known as a goiter, and other thyroid problems. In children, it can cause mental disabilities. Your body does not produce iodine naturally, so the only way to get this nutrient is through your diet. Adults usually need 150 micrograms per day. Pregnant and nursing women need 200 mg daily. Iodine is found in many types of food. It is more concentrated in foods like: iodine deficiency affects about 2 billion people worldwide. It is more common in developing countries where people may lack access to enough healthy food. But it can also affect people in developed countries who lack an adequate diet or whose bodies do not properly process iodine. Pregnant women need more iodine than any other group of people. Because of this, they are likely to experience a deficiency if they do not make a conscious effort to consume high iodine foods. Signs and symptoms of iodine deficiency include: Swelling of thyroid glands in the neck This can cause a visible lump, called goiter, to form in the neck. Low levels of thyroid hormones (hypothyroidism) often cause symptoms that may include: In babies, hypothyroidism is likely to cause symptoms such as: In children and adolescents, this condition may cause: Cognitive Issues Symptoms may include: When not treated, iodine deficiency may lead to severe hypothyroidism. Complications may include:The few amounts of thyroid hormone in pregnant women may increase the risk of birth defects of your child. Problems related to pregnancy that iodine deficiency may cause include: In severe cases, iodine deficiency can cause a condition called cretinism. Myxedema is a rare complication but that threatens the life of hypothyroidism that can be caused by iodine deficiency. Symptoms include: In people with hypothyroidism, certain things can trigger a mixedema coma. These include sedatives, infection, or other stress factors in the body. Myxedema is an emergency condition that requires immediate medical treatment. If you experience any of your symptoms, call 911 immediately. If your doctor suspects that you have a iodine deficiency, you will usually review your iodine levels in one of four ways: iodine deficiency is best corrected by a healthy diet. If your diet alone is not providing enough iodine, you may want to consider adding a iodine supplement. People who may not receive enough iodine through food often include: iodine supplements containing potassium are the most easily absorbed by the body. Find supplements containing potassium iodida and potassium iodine. Do not take supplements in excess of 150 mcg per day. This could cause an overload of iodine, which is also harmful to the thyroid. Most people with iodine deficiency can fix their health problems by changing their diet and adding. People with mixedema require hospitalization. In the hospital, doctors will administer and other stabilizer treatments. They will also administer thyroid hormones to correct the condition. After a person with mixedema is stable, the doctor will monitor your thyroid function and determine whether a change in the diet to make sure they consume enough iodine will keep your hormone levels stable. If detected early, iodine deficiency can be completely reversed with few or no side effect. However, if detected after complications arise, many complications — especially in children — can be permanent. But even if complications have developed after iodine deficiency, making sure you get enough iodine going forward can prevent complications from getting worse.
